1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2021.

Stoner by John Williams (1965), ഒരു സാധാരണ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ കഥ. ജീവിതം മുഴുവൻ underdog കഴിയുന്ന ഒരാൾ ജീവിതത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് തിരിഞ്ഞുനോക്കുമ്പോൾ അയാൾക്ക് എന്താണ് തോന്നുക? അയാളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഒരു സമ്മറി പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടാണ് നോവൽ തുടങ്ങുന്നത് തന്നെ. പിന്നെ അയാളുടെ monotonous ജീവിതം വിവരിയ്ക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. അതിൽ നിന്ന് ജോൺ വില്യംസ് ഒരു മാസ്റ്റർപീസ് നിർമ്മിയ്ക്കുന്നു. വളരെ സമയമെടുത്ത് സാവധാനം വായിച്ച നോവൽ. വിശദമായി എഴുതാം.

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021.

My Struggle 2, രണ്ടാമത് വായിച്ചത്. ഇനിയും കൂടുതൽ പറഞ്ഞ് വെറുപ്പിയ്ക്കുന്നില്ല. ഇതല്ലാതെ സീരീസുകൾ വായനയിലുണ്ട് (Fosse, Durrell), പക്ഷെ സീരീസിലെ ഒന്നാമത്തെ പുസ് തകങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല.

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

Ronan Hession എഴുതിയ Panenka, കഴിഞ്ഞ വർഷം അയാൾ എഴുതിയ Leonard and Hungry Paul, ഞാൻ ട്രൂ കോപ്പിയ്ക്കു വേണ്ടി 2020-നെ പ്രതിനിധീകരിയ്ക്കുന്ന രണ്ടു പുസ്തകങ്ങളിലൊന്നായി തെരെഞ്ഞെടുത്തിരുന്നു.

Rabbit Foot Bill by Helen Humphreys, എന്തൊരു ദുരന്ത പൈങ്കിളി ക്ളീഷേ പുസ്തകം. ഞാൻ രണ്ടു സ്റ്റാർ കൊടുത്തു അതുപോലും അര്ഹിയ്ക്കാത്ത ചവർ.

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn, മറ്റൊരു ദുരന്തനോവൽ. ആദ്യഭാഗങ്ങൾ ഒരു രസമെങ്കിലുമുണ്ട്. പിന്നെ ഹോളിവുഡ് ക്ളീഷേ സീനുകൾ.

പിന്നെ, Jon McGregor എഴുതിയ Lean Fall Stand, അത് മുഴുവനായി പരാജയപ്പെട്ട നോവലായിരുന്നില്ല, ഞാൻ പല ഭാഗങ്ങളും ആസ്വദിയ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. എന്നാലും ഒരു നിരാശ.

When We Cease to Understand the World by Benjamín Labatut. ഫാക്റ്റ്സ്, ഹിസ്റ്ററി, ഫിക്ഷൻ കോമ്പിനേഷൻ. Its often clever and sometimes brilliant.

You also pay very close attention to “official” or political language in your fiction—the police list in The God of Small Things, the way Anjum in Ministry keeps using hijra while Saeeda adopts terms like MTF and FTM and cisgender, and labels like “untouchable” or “scheduled caste.”

The more I think about it, the more I realize how important this is to me—to be alert to public language, as well as the search for my own private language. When the nuclear tests happened in the nineties, for example, there was a complete change in the public language that was permissible to use in India. The idea that India had announced itself as a nuclear power, much of the commentary had to do with a new, aggressive Hindu nationalism, meant that portraying people as “real” or “true” Indians, the stigmatization and profiling of religious minorities, particularly Muslims, became acceptable. Overt Islamophobia became customary. That shift in the language is what made me write “The End of Imagination”—my essay on India’s nuclear tests. Then, when I traveled to the Narmada Valley and wrote about the antidam movement, there was a different language. People would refer to themselves as paps—project-affected persons. Are you a pap? No, my name is not on the list. In Assam now, because of the National Register of Citizens, there is a new vocabulary. Fisherfolk in far-flung islands use English words like doubtful voters, declared foreigners, and genuine citizen, and worry about how to organize legacy documents. In Kashmir the military occupation has spawned its own vocabulary. It’s laid out in Tilo’s Kashmiri–English dictionary in The Ministry of Utmost Happiness. And then there is the language of caste—the abhorrent traditional usage, the repulsive official terms. The way in which, in several vernaculars, women and people from Shudra and Dalit castes will be referred to in disrespectful ways that are coded into language itself.

How am I to explain all this to you? The story is, for me, life itself. The telling of the story is a story in itself. And the language in which the story is told is another whole story in itself. Because, in this part of the world, language is an ocean teeming with shoals of language fish and word fish.

Fitzcarraldo editions ഇറക്കിയ Nicontine, ഒന്നുമില്ല വെള്ള കവർ. നീല ഒറ്റവരി ടൈറ്റിൽ, ഫ്ലാപ്പിന്റെ ഉൾവശം നീല. നേരെ കാണുമ്പോൾ ഇത്ര ഭംഗിയുള്ള ഒന്നുമില്ല.
