2019 Reading – Part I

1. Trick – Domenico Starnone – ക്രിയേറ്റീവ് ബ്ലോക്ക് നേരിടുന്ന ഒരു ഇല്ലസ്ട്രേഷൻ ആർട്ടിസ്റ്റ് മകളുടെ കുഞ്ഞുമകനെ ഒന്നുരണ്ടു ദിവസം ബേബിസിറ്റ് ചെയ്യാനായി അവളുടെ വീട്ടിലെത്തുന്നു. ആ കുഞ്ഞുമൊത്തുള്ള അയാളുടെ frustrated ദിവസങ്ങൾ, ക്രിയേറ്റിവിറ്റിയുമായുള്ള മൽപ്പിടുത്തം എല്ലാം വിവരിയ്ക്കുന്ന നോവെല്ല.

2. Death of a Naturalist – Seamus Heaney – ഹീനിയുടെ മാസ്റ്റർപീസ്.

Digging എന്ന കവിതയിൽ നിന്ന് :-

“My grandfather cut more turf in a day

Than any other man on Toner’s bog.

Once I carried him milk in a bottle

Corked sloppily with paper. He straightened up

To drink it, then fell to right away

Nicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods

Over his shoulder, going down and down

For the good turf. Digging.

The cold smell of potato mould, the squelch and slap

Of soggy peat, the curt cuts of an edge

Through living roots awaken in my head.

But I’ve no spade to follow men like them.

Between my finger and my thumb

The squat pen rests.

I’ll dig with it.”

3. Rules for Visiting – Jessica Francis Kane – “Perhaps a best friend is someone who…holds the story of your life in mind. Sometimes in music a melodic line is so beautiful the notes feel inevitable; you can anticipate the next note through a long rest. Maybe that is friendship. A best friend holds your story in mind so notes don’t have to be repeated.” – സാധാരണ എന്റെ വായനയിൽ വരാത്ത തരം പുസ്തകം. സൗഹൃദത്തെപ്പറ്റിയും ലാൻഡ്‌സ്‌കേപ്പിങ്ങിനെ പറ്റിയും വിവരിയ്ക്കുന്ന intimate എന്ന് വിളിയ്ക്കാവുന്ന ആഖ്യാനമുള്ളത്.

4. A Nail, A Rose And Other Stories – Madeleine Bourdouxhe – A neat collection of short stories mostly about “lonely, fantasizing women”. Three stories stood out in my reading  ‘A Nail, A Rose’ which starts darkly (main character is attacked by a stranger with a hammer) and then takes a warm turn  by the end, followed by perhaps the best story in the collection, “Louise” which focuses on the thoughts and fantasies of a woman who works as a maid during daytime and wanders the city at night thinking about her erstwhile lover wearing a coat borrowed from her mistress. Collection ends with “Sous le pont Mirabeau”, a long, brilliantly crafted story, about a woman moving from town to town escaping the calamities of a raging second world war, which is said to be based on the writer’s own experiences. Faith Evan’s translation is a joy to read. Thanks to NetGalley and Pushkin for the review copy.

5. Breath – Tim Winton – ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയൻ എഴുത്തുകാരനായ ടിം വിന്റൺ മനോഹരമായ ഭാഷ കൈവശമുള്ളയാളാണ്, ആസ്‌ത്രേലിയയയുടെ ആവേശമുണർത്തുന്ന പ്രകൃതിയാണ് അയാളുടെ എഴുത്തിലെ നിത്യസാന്നിധ്യം. ബ്രെത്ത് (Breath) എന്ന നോവൽ കഴിഞ്ഞ വർഷം സിനിമയാവുകയും നിരൂപകശ്രദ്ധ പിടിച്ചു പറ്റുകയും ചെയ്തിരുന്നു(എനിയ്ക്കു അത്രയ്ക്ക് സുഖിച്ചില്ല). സർഫിംഗ് നമുക്ക് പൊതുവെ  ധാരണയുമില്ലാത്ത കായിക വിനോദമാണല്ലോ (പോയിന്റ് ബ്രേക്ക് എന്ന സിനിമ കണ്ടവരുണ്ടോ, അതിന്റെ എൻഡിങ് ഓർമ്മയുള്ളവർ ?) – സ്വാഭാവികമായും ഈ നോവൽ വായിയ്ക്കാനെടുക്കുമ്പോൾ അത്തരമൊരു കഥ ബോറിംഗ് ആയിരിയ്ക്കുമോ എന്ന ഒരു സംശയമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. വിന്റൺ അതിവിദഗ്ധമായാണ് സർഫിങ്ങിന്റെ സാങ്കേതിക വശം കഥയിൽ ചേർത്തിരിയ്ക്കുന്നത്. കഥയ്ക്ക് പശ്ചാത്തലമായി വരുന്ന, സദാ കാറ്റും മഴയുമുള്ള ഒരു കടൽത്തീരനഗരത്തിൽ വളർന്നയാളാണ് വിന്റൺ. ആത്മകഥാംശം എത്രയുണ്ടെന്ന് പറയുക വയ്യെങ്കിലും നോവലിലെ കൗമാരക്കാരന്റെ ലോകം പിടിച്ചെടുക്കുന്നതിൽ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ വിജയിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട് – അവസാനത്തെ ചെറിയ ട്വിസ്റ്റൊഴികെ ഈ നോവൽ ഈസ് ആൻ എക്സൈറ്റിങ് റീഡ്.

6. The Shepherd’s Hut – Tim Winton – വിന്റന്റെ മറ്റൊരു ഉജ്ജ്വല കൃതി. അച്ഛനും മകനും തമ്മിലുള്ള സംഘർഷം. മകനും ലോകവും തമ്മിലുള്ളത്. അവസാനം മകൻ അച്ഛന്റെ പോലെ അക്രമത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് തിരിയുമോ? ആസ്ട്രേലിയൻ പ്രകൃതി വിന്റന്റെ മറ്റേതു നോവലിലെയും പോലെ കഥയ്ക്ക് പശ്ചാത്തലമൊരുക്കുന്നു.

7. Red Roofs and Other Stories – Jun’ichirō Tanizaki – തനിസാകിയുടെ കഥാലോകത്തേയ്ക്കുള്ള കവാടം. വേശ്യാത്തെരുവുകളിലെ അലച്ചിലിന്റെ കഥപറയുന്ന A Night in Qinhuai എന്ന കഥ വേറിട്ട് നിൽക്കുന്നു, താനിസാകിയുടെ മികച്ച വർക്കുകളിൽ ഒന്നാണിത്. സമാഹാരം mixed bag ആണ് എന്നിരിയ്ക്കിലും, അന്ന് കാലത്തിനു മുന്നേ നടന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരന്റെ കയ്യൊപ്പ് വ്യക്തമായി കാണാവുന്ന കഥകൾ.

9. Kaathikante Kala – M.T. Vasudevan Nair – ആമുഖം ആവശ്യമില്ലാത്ത കൃതി. ഒരു നല്ല എഴുത്തുകാരൻ നല്ല വായനക്കാരനായിരിയ്ക്കും എന്നതിന്റെ ഉദാഹരണമായി എംടിയെ ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിയ്ക്കുന്നത് എന്തുകൊണ്ടാണെന്ന്  പുസ്തകത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യഭാഗം വായിയ്ക്കുമ്പോൾ തന്നെ മനസ്സിലാകും. മലയാളത്തിൽ അധികം പേർ വായിച്ചിരിയ്ക്കാനിടയില്ലാത്ത യുഡോറ വെൽറ്റി, ഫ്ലാനറി ഓ കൊണോർ (അവരുടെ ഫാബെർ സീരീസ് കഥ അടുത്ത് വായിച്ചത് “A Good Man is Hard to Find” ഉജ്ജ്വലമായിരുന്നു), ഇപ്പോഴും (തന്റെ എൺപതുകളിൽ) നിരന്തരം പല തരം ജോണ്റെകളിൽ എഴുതുന്ന ജോയ്‌സ് കരൾ ഓട്സ് തുടങ്ങി ഒരു വലിയ സ്പെക്ട്രത്തിലൊതുങ്ങുന്ന എഴുത്തുകാരെ ഇന്റെർനെറ്റോ ആമസോണോ ഇല്ലാതിരുന്ന കാലത്ത് കണ്ടെടുത്തു വായിച്ചെന്നതാണ് എംടിയുടെ മേന്മ. കൂട്ടത്തിൽ അസുരവിത്ത് എന്ന നോവലിൽ താൻ എത്ര അദ്ധ്വാനിച്ചെന്നും എന്നാൽ എത്ര നിരാശയുളവാക്കുന്നതായിരുന്നു അതിനു കിട്ടിയ ആദ്യ പ്രതികരണങ്ങളെന്നും എംടി ഓർത്തെടുക്കുന്നു. ഇപ്പോൾ നമുക്കറിയാം, എംടിയുടെ ഭാഷയും ആ തീമിന്റെ uniqueness-ഉം ആ കൃതിയെ എത്ര കണ്ടു വേറിട്ട് നിറുത്തുന്നു എന്നുള്ളത് (എം ടിയുടെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച നോവലാണ്). പൊറ്റെക്കാടിനെപ്പറ്റിയും ബഷീറിനെപ്പറ്റിയും എംടി വാചാലനാകുന്നെങ്കിലും അവരുടെ സ്വാധീനം അയാളുടെ എഴുത്തിൽ കണ്ടെടുക്കാൻ എനിയ്ക്കു കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല. ബഷീറിനെ മറ്റൊരു മലയാളി എഴുത്തുകാരനിൽ കണ്ടെടുക്കാനാകും എന്നെനിയ്ക്കു തോന്നുന്നുമില്ല. മലയാളത്തിൽ തുടർച്ചയില്ലാത്തതാണ് ബഷീറിന്റെ ഭാഷ. സമാഹാരത്തിലെ അവസാന രണ്ടു ലേഖനങ്ങൾ ഈ രണ്ടു എഴുത്തുകാരെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള ഓർമ്മകളാണ്(ഡേറ്റഡ് ഫീലിംഗ് ഉണ്ടാകും). അതൊഴികെയുള്ള അഞ്ചെണ്ണം എഴുത്തിന്റെ രാസവിദ്യയിൽ താൽപ്പര്യമുള്ളവർക്കു മാത്രമല്ല, വായനക്കാർക്കും റെക്കമെന്റ് ചെയ്യുന്നു.

10. Sabrina –  Nick Drones –  ബുക്കർ ലിസ്റ്റിൽ വന്ന ഗ്രാഫിക് നോവൽ. ഡിപ്രഷനെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള, നഷ്ടത്തെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള, അസാധാരണമായ കഥ.

12. A Good Man is Hard to Find – Flannery O’Connor – ഫെയ്‌ബർ സീരീസിലെ മികച്ച പുസ്തകങ്ങളിലൊന്ന്. Flannery-യുടെ മികച്ച കഥകളിലൊന്ന്. വളരെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട അമേരിക്കൻ ചെറുകഥ.

13. My Life and Hard Times – James Thurber – ഹാസ്യത്തിന്റെ മേമ്പൊടിയുള്ള കഥകൾ. Read for the three hilarious stories in the collection – “The night the bed fell”, “The night the ghost got in” and “More alarms at night” – rest are a bit dated for my taste. Yeh, its a bit hard to comment on a collection thats considered a classic by now but I found rest of the stories a bit dry.

14. Moonstone: The Boy Who Never Was – Sjón – Sjón’s “Moonstone” is a deceptively simple novella. It follows a 16 years old boy in 1918’s Iceland. The country is still recovering from the aftereffects of the world war, volcano Katla is spewing ashes and to top it all, the Spanish Flu that killed many in Europe, sweeps across the country and people are dying like bugs. Beginning with a rather graphic gay sex scene between an adult and a minor, the novel quietly shifts its focus to how the island’s devastated by the flu – thousands are killed and the boy himself falls sick, but thanks to the old woman whom he lives with, he manages to survive. This old lady is his grandmother’s sister. The boy volunteers to help the medical team (his only concern are the closed cinema halls – authorities have shut them down for being breeding grounds for the flu). It is this mid part that elevates the rather deftly written short novel. There is also a revelation towards the end that completely changes what we read until then and holds it in a new light. Sjon is a skilled writer and brevity is one of the key qualities he exhibits here. But the novel’s impact is in no way diminished by its length.

15. The Blue Fox – Sjón – ഷിയോണിന്റെ മറ്റൊരു പ്രശസ്ത കൃതി. അതിമനോഹരമായ ഭാഷയിൽ ഒരു വേട്ടക്കാരന്റെയും മഞ്ഞിൽ അയാൾ പിന്തുടരുന്ന ഒരു കുറുക്കന്റെയും കഥ പറയുകയാണ് ഷിയോൺ. കേവലം 112 പേജുകളുള്ള പുസ്തകത്തിൽ ഈ കഥ മറ്റു പല കഥകളുമായി ചേർന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്‍തമായ വായനാനുഭവമായി തീരുന്നു. ഭാഷയുടെ ഭംഗി നോക്കുക :-

“The sun warms the man’s white body, and the snow, melting with a diffident creaking, passes for birdsong.”

“The world opens its good eye a crack. A ptarmigan belches. The streams trickle under their glazing of ice, dreaming of spring, when they’ll swell to a life-threatening force. Smoke curls up from mounds of snow here and there on the mountainsides – these are their farms.”

“In the halls of heaven it was now dark enough for the Aurora Borealis sisters to begin their lively dance of the veils. With an enchanting play of colors they flitted light and quick about the great stage of the heavens, in fluttering golden dresses, their tumbling pearl necklaces scattering here and there in their wild caperings.”

“Everything here is a uniform blue, apart from the glitter of the tops. It is winter in the Dale.”

18. Terrific Mother: Faber Stories – Lorrie Moore – ഒരു കൈക്കുഞ്ഞു അപകടത്തിൽ മരിയ്ക്കുന്ന അസുഖകരമായ രംഗത്തിൽ ആരംഭിയ്ക്കുന്ന ഹാസ്യത്തിന്റെ മേമ്പൊടിയുള്ള കഥ. കഥാകാരിയുടെ സാഹിത്യലോകത്തേയ്ക്ക് ഒരു നല്ല ഇൻട്രോ.

19. Limonov: The Outrageous Adventures of the Radical Soviet Poet Who Became a Bum in New York, a Sensation in France, and a Political Antihero in Russia –  Emmanuel Carrère – കവിയും, നോവലിസ്റ്റും, ബട്ലറും, ജേർണലിസ്റ്റും, സൈനികനും, നിയോ നാസിയും, കമ്മ്യൂണിസ്റ്റുകാരനും, ഫാസിസ്റ്റും എല്ലാമായി കാലാകാലം വേഷം കെട്ടുന്ന ഒരു റഷ്യാക്കാരനെ (ലൈമൊനോവ് പുസ്തകങ്ങളെഴുതിയിട്ടുണ്ട്, അഥവാ വീണ്ടും നോവലും യാഥാർഥ്യവും തമ്മിലുള്ള അതിർത്തി നേർത്തതാണ്) റഷ്യയിലും, അമേരിക്കയിലും, പാരീസിലും, സാരയെവോയിലും എല്ലാം പിന്തുടരുകയാണ് എഴുത്തുകാരൻ. ഈ കാലത്ത് സോവിയറ്റ് യൂണിയൻ തകരുന്നു, സെർബിയൻ യുദ്ധം നടക്കുന്നു – ഇതിന്റെയൊക്കെ കലുഷിതമായ രാഷ്ട്രീയം നോവലിന്റെ അന്തർധാരയായി വരുന്നു. രണ്ടിടങ്ങളിലെയും അന്തർനാടകങ്ങളും കമ്മ്യുണിസ്റ്റ് റഷ്യയുടെ യഥാർത്ഥ ചിത്രണവും, ഗോർബച്ചേവും പിന്നീട് യെൽസിനും വരുത്തിവയ്ക്കുന്ന നാശവും, അതിന്റെ അനന്തരഫലങ്ങളും (എണ്ണക്കമ്പനികളാണ് തികഞ്ഞ പരാജയമായ യെൽസിനെ അവിടെ രണ്ടാമതും ജയിപ്പിയ്ക്കുന്നത്, ഇക്കൂട്ടരുടെ കയ്യിലായിരുന്നു മേജർ മീഡിയ മുഴുവൻ – ഇന്ത്യയിലെപ്പോലെ തന്നെ, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ കമ്മ്യുണിസ്റ്റ് ഭരണം വന്നേനെ) എല്ലാം ചേർന്ന് കമ്യുണിസം തിരിച്ചുവരണമെന്ന് പോലും ആളുകൾ കരുതാൻ തുടങ്ങുന്ന സ്ഥിതിയെത്തി. ഈ കാലത്തൊക്കെ റഷ്യൻ രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിന്റെ അവിഭാജ്യ ഘടകമായിരുന്ന അവിശ്വസനീയമായ ഒരു ജീവിതമാണ് ലൈമൊനോവിന്റെ, എന്നാൽ ആ നാടുകളിലെ “stranger than fiction” സംഭവങ്ങളെ കണക്കിലെടുക്കുമ്പോൾ സ്വാഭാവികവും.

20. Kokoro – Natsume Sōseki – ജാപ്പനിസ് ക്‌ളാസ്സിക്. ലളിതം. സൗഹൃദത്തിന്റെ കഥ. അന്നാട്ടിലെ സാഹിത്യത്തിന്റെ ആഴവും പരപ്പും അന്വേഷിയ്ക്കുന്നവർ നിശ്ചയം വായിയ്ക്കേണ്ടുന്ന പുസ്തകം.

21. The Emissary – Yōko Tawada – സയൻസ്/സ്പെക്കുലേറ്റീവ് ഫിക്ഷൻ ജോൺറെയിൽ മറ്റൊരു ജാപ്പനീസ് ചെറു നോവൽ. ബുക്കർ ലിസ്റ്റിൽ വന്ന നോവൽ. മുൻധാരണകളില്ലാതെ വായിച്ചപ്പോൾ അസാധാരണമായ അനുഭവം.

22. Fever Dream – Samanta Schweblin – ഷ്വെബ്ലിന്റെ പിൽക്കാല കഥകളിലെ ഭീതിലോകത്തിന്റെ ആമുഖമായി കാണാവുന്ന ചെറുനോവൽ. സങ്കീർണമായ കഥ അവധാനതയോടെ വായിയ്ക്കുന്നവർക്കു കുരുക്കഴിച്ചെടുക്കാവുന്ന വിധത്തിൽ അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിയ്ക്കുന്നു. ആഖ്യാനമികവുകൊണ്ടാണ് നോവൽ വേറിട്ട് നിൽക്കുന്നത്.

25. The Cemetery in Barnes – Gabriel Josipovici – “three voices, three languages, three countries.” നൂറു പേജുകളിൽ, സങ്കീർണ്ണമായ നോവെല്ല. ഒരു വായനയിൽ പുസ്തകം പിടി തരില്ല എന്ന് മാത്രം പറയുന്നു.

28. Police (Harry Hole, #10) – Jo Nesbø – യു നെസ്‌ബോയുടെ മികച്ച വർക്കുകളിലൊന്ന്. Atmospheric. Cruel.
